This red shudei Tokoname-yaki clay kyusu (teapot) features a fine 'sasame' filter and is decorated with engraved and painted flowers. Wider than the more traditional debeso (half-spherical) filters, the sasame-style allows for faster pouring and less clogging, while still being made of clay and thus ensuring that no metal comes into contact with the tea.

This teapot is made by the Takasuke kiln (高資窯) who are known for their perfection of the 'ikomi' (moulding) process, boasting teapots with excellent balance and pour. As such, kyusu from the Takasuke workshop are recommended by the Japanese Tea Instructors Association.


Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, pottery has been made in Tokoname since the 12th century.

Today, Tokoname ware is known for its iconic brick-red clay called shudei. Famously used in teaware and bonsai pots, this clay’s vibrant colour comes from its rich iron content. Tea steeped in unglazed Tokoname teapots is said to have a mellower taste.
