Unlike the vast majority of tea canisters, those made by Kotodo are handmade by a small tea of skilled craftsmen. The base material is a lead-free, food-grade tin-plated steel that is rolled and welded. All of the cut edges are carefully beveled and rolled, making every surface smooth to the touch.
The decorative washi paper is hand-applied in two pieces: one for the top of the lid and one for the entire side of the can. Only after the paper has been applied is the seam between the lid and the body cut open. This ensures that the pattern lines up perfectly when the lid is closed.
Founded in 1910, Kotodo (江東堂) has been producing handmade tea canisters for more than a century. Compared to machine-made canisters, their washi-wrapping is seamless, with no bumps where the lid meets the body, producing a clean silhouette. Additionally, the lid can be rotated counter-clockwise until it clicks, ensuring the pattern is perfectly aligned.
