A blend of bancha and roasted rice, genmaicha supposedly began as a way for common folk to ‘dilute’ tea, which was an expensive luxury, with inexpensive rice. However, the more concrete evidence suggests that it may have been developed in the early 1900s by Kyoto tea merchants instead.
