This Seto-yaki kogo (incense container) is made in the shape of a basket and is glazed in the ki-seto (黄瀬戸 - Yellow Seto) style.

A kogo (香合) is a container used to hold and present incense during a tea ceremony. Rather than the incense sticks you may be familiar with, the incense used for a tea ceremony comes in two forms: nerikoh/nerikou (練香) - balls of kneaded incense, and kohboku/kouboku (香木) small squares or chips of fragrant woods such as aloeswood/agarwood or sandalwood. In the summer, wooden or lacquered kogo are used to hold kouboku, while in the winter, ceramic kogo are used to hold nerikou.

Made by Shigeru Yamaguchi (山口茂). Ships in original tomobako (wooden paulownia box)
