This porcelain kōgō (香合 - incense container) is made in a hexagonal shape and decorated in the sometsuke (染付 - blue and white porcelain) style with cloud motifs and the characters 壬申 瑞雲 which translate to "Water Monkey" (the Years of the Monkey 1932, 1992, 2052, etc.) and "Auspicious Clouds"

In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kōgō (香合) are used to hold kōboku (香木 - fragrant wood incense) during the furo (風炉 - brazier) season while ceramic kōgō are used to hold nerikō (練り香 - kneaded incense) during the ro (炉 - hearth) season.
