This Kyo-yaki ceramic kōgō (incense container) is made in the shape of a hagoita (羽子板), the paddle used in hanetsuki, Japanese badminton. The kōgō is painted and gilded with traditional motifs.

Made by Hashimoto Shirotake (橋本城岳), this kōgō comes with its original kirbako (桐箱 - wooden paulownia box)

In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kōgō (香合) are used to hold kōboku (香木 - fragrant wood incense) during the furo (風炉 - brazier) season while ceramic kōgō are used to hold nerikō (練り香 - kneaded incense) during the ro (炉 - hearth) season.

Kyo-yaki (京焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Kyoto, Japan. The pottery traditions of Kyoto date back to the 5th century and are varied in their styles.
