This antique Kyo-yaki chawan (matcha bowl) is made in the blue-and-white sometsuke (染付) style, with elegant blue brushwork over a crazed white glaze, stained beige with age. The painting is of the shichikenjin (七賢人) or seven sages.

This chawan was made by Aoki Mokubei ((青木木米) sometime in the late Edo era, likely between 1800 and 1833. Mokubei was born in Kyoto in 1767 and is famed for his talents in painting, calligraphy, and pottery. He opened his first kiln at the age of thirty and produced a wide variety of wares, particularly focusing on teaware made in Chinese styles. Mokube died in 1833 at the age of 67.
