Japanese Matcha Bowl - 風山 - Red Oil Spot Glazed Kutsu-gata Chawan - 200ml

This product is no longer available

This chawan (matcha bowl) is made in the unique kutsu-gata style and is glazed with a iron rich glaze fired in reduction, producing a striking red with oil spot effects.

Kutsu-gata (沓形 - clog/shoe-shaped) bowls were developed by famed chajin Furuta Oribe in the late 1500s/early 1600s. Oribe purposely distorted his bowls, manipulating them into various warped shapes, which played into his aesthetic philosophy, called hyouge (ひょうげ/剽げ/へうげ) which roughly translates to ‘playful’, ‘charming’, ‘jocular’, etc.

Made by 風山, this chawan comes with its original kiribako (桐箱 - wooden paulownia box)
