Shin-Nuri Black Lacquered Wooden Tenmoku-dai

This product is no longer available

This black lacquered tenmoku-dai (天目台- stand for tenmoku chawan) is made from wood and coated in shin-nuri black lacquer. With some age, the lacquer has acquired a slight warm brown hue.

Traditionally, tenmoku chawan are always used atop a tenmoku-dai, which elevates and stabilises the bowl. The original tenmoku-dai were from Song Dynasty China and were brought to Japan along with the tenmoku chawan. While most commonly made in plain black lacquer, some historical pieces display ornate decorations, from carved lacquer to intricate mother-of-pearl inlays.
