Dotted Nerikomi Tokoname Teapot - 300ml

Tōsen Kiln
Price: $116.00
Description

This striking, marbled Tokoname-yaki kyusu (teapot) has a classic hiramaru (平丸 - flattened circle) shape, and is made from green, red, yellow, and ivory clay kneaded together in the nerikomi (練り込み) technique. On top of the marbled clay, a thin layer of dark grey slip is applied and finished with a subtle texture. Around the rim of the pot, the grey slip is cut away in dots, revealing layers and patterns of marbled clay underneath. The inside also showcases the nerikomi clay. The built-in ceramic sasame filter is perfect for naturally straining tea, with a wide shape for faster pouring and less clogging.

This kyusu also displays Tōsen's innovative spirit in with its uniquely triangular handle and spout: the former for ergonomics and the latter for clean and controlled pouring.

Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, pottery has been made in Tokoname since the 12th century.

Today, Tokoname ware is known for its iconic brick-red clay called shudei. Famously used in teaware and bonsai pots, this clay’s vibrant colour comes from its rich iron content. Tea steeped in unglazed Tokoname teapots is said to have a mellower taste.

Nerikomi (練り込み) is a pottery technique in which multiple coloured clays are kneaded together to produce a stunning marbled effect. This technique is almost exclusively used on unglazed wares, allowing the full effect to be shown in the bare clay. Often, slices or cuts are made into the surface of the pot to reveal even more layering and marbling.

Similar techniques are sometimes called agateware for the resemblance to the layers in agate.

Hida Hisanori (肥田寿典) is the second generation head of Tōsen and was born on December 25th, 1956. He inherited his father's specialty of nerikomi (練り込み), a highly sophisticated technique in which clays of different colours are layered, combined, kneaded, and shaped to form interesting and beautiful marbling patterns.

In more traditional forms, Hida-san's work reflects the subdued beauty and functional clarity typical of Tokoname ware. In his more contemporary pieces, he achieves delicate lines and a sense of lightness, while always retaining a distinct warmth.
