This stunning Tokoname-yaki gaiwan is thrown from a stylish white clay in a clean, modern, minimalist style, with a gradient to black around the rim of the bowl. Expressing Junzō's modern aesthetic tastes, this gaiwan features a flared shape, button-style lid knob, and a wide saucer.

Made by Junzō Maekawa (前川淳蔵), who was born in 1976 and is one of Tokoname's younger kyusu craftsmen. With a background in engineering, Maekawa-san is known for producing functional wares and experimenting with clays and glazes. He is the fourth generation owner of Kenzan Kiln (賢山窯).

Gaiwan (盖碗 - lit. lidded bowl) are a popular Chinese style of brewing vessel dating back to the Ming Dynasty. They traditionally consist of three pieces: the bowl, the lid, and the saucer (though this is often omitted). By creating a narrow opening between the lid and the body, the leaves can be filtered from the tea when pouring or sipping. Though originally gaiwan were used as cups to drink from directly, today it is most common to use them as a teapot, and pour the tea into a pitcher or smaller cups.

As these are handmade pieces, there may be slight variations in the shape and colouration.

The gaiwan comes in its original kiribako (桐箱 - paulownia wood box) signed and sealed by the artist.

Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, pottery has been made in Tokoname since the 12th century.

Today, Tokoname ware is known for its iconic brick-red clay called shudei. Famously used in teaware and bonsai pots, this clay’s vibrant colour comes from its rich iron content. Tea steeped in unglazed Tokoname teapots is said to have a mellower taste.
