Japanese Kogo - 赤膚山 Akiyama Kiln - White Bird Akahada-yaki Incense Container

This Akahada-yaki kogo (incense container) features a white glaze over an elaborate bird motif sculpted in clay.

In Japanese tea ceremony, kogo are used to hold wood chip incense during the furo (brazier - summer/spring) season while ceramic kogo are used to hold neriko (kneaded incense) during the ro (hearth - autumn/winter) season.

This piece was made by the Akiyama Kiln (昭山窯), stamped 赤膚山, a traditional stamp of Akahada-yaki, a pottery tradition from Nara Prefecture.
