Japanese Kogo - Camellia Red Lacquered Wood Incense Container

This Japanese kogo (incense container) is made from red lacquered wood, decorated wit ha carved camellia in the Ming dynasty Chinese style.

In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kogo are used to hold wood chip incense during the furo (brazier - summer/spring) season while ceramic kogo are used to hold neriko (kneaded incense) during the ro (hearth - autumn/winter) season.
