This wan-nari Shibukusa-yaki chawan (matcha bowl) features a grey glaze decorated with gold and red rooster, plus bamboo motifs and geometric patterns.
One of Japan's younger pottery traditions, Shibukusa-yaki (渋草焼) began in 1841 when the 21st Gundai of Takayama in Hida invited potters from the nearby Seto and Kutani regions to produce pottery for his new klin. The influence of Kutani-yaki can be seen in the vibrant red paintings of bold landscapes and geometric patterns that are often found on Shibukusa wares.
