This lacquer natsume (matcha caddy) is made from wood coated with traditional urushi red lacquer on its exterior and black lacquer on its interior. This natsume is decorated with a gold crane and geometric patterns.
Matcha natsume are one of the two traditional containers used to present the powdered tea during a tea ceremony. Named after the Japanese word for the jujube fruit due to their similar shape, natsume are used when preparing usucha (thin, foamy matcha).
Because most natsume are not airtight, they are not suitable for long term storage and are only intended for presentation and heightening the tea making experience.
