This brown synthetic lacquer natsume (matcha caddy) is decorated with traditional 'shippo' (七宝) motifs in gold and red.
Matcha natsume are one of the two traditional containers used to present the powdered tea during a tea ceremony. Named after the Japanese word for the jujube fruit due to their similar shape, natsume are used when preparing usucha (thin, foamy matcha). Because most natsume are not airtight, they are not suitable for long term storage and are only intended for presentation and heightening the tea making experience.
