Japanese Teacup - 木村 好博 Kimura Yoshihiro - Yuteki Tenmoku Echizen-yaki Guinomi - 75ml

This product is no longer available

This stunning Echizen-yaki guinomi (small cup for tea or sake) is glazed in an entrancing yuteki tenmoku glaze.

Originating in Jian ware from Song dynasty China, this style of glazing was originally praised for its dark colour which contrasts nicely with the froth of whisked tea. In Japan, these bowls became known as Tenmoku, named after a mountain in China.

While most Tenmoku glazes are a simple black, occasionally the conditions in the kiln are just right, producing beautiful effects, such as the one seen on this cup, which is called Yuteki, or 'oil spot'. This guinomi was made 木村 好博 (Kimura Yoshihiro) of Momoyama kiln (桃山窯). Born in Kyoto in 1950, Kimura-san is known for his tenmoku glazes.
