This wooden natsume/usuchaki (usucha tea caddy) is made in the shape of a gourd (瓢 -hisago). The wood is also incised with fine lines, adding visual interest and providing a beautiful texture. The inside is coated with black urushi lacquer.
Natsume are one of the two types of containers used to hold and present the matcha during a tea ceremony. They are used when preparing 'thin tea' or usucha (foamy matcha).
Because most natsume are not airtight, they are not suitable for long term storage of matcha and are only intended for short term use, designed for presentation and heightening the tea making experience.
