Tatami Sobagara Pillow

This traditional sobagara makura (そば殻枕 - buckwheat husk pillow) features a natural igusa straw surface, woven in the light and pillowy hikime-ori (引き目織) that is used for tatami floor mats. The real, natural igusa straw is known for is fresh scent, which slowly dissipates over time. The green hue to the straw will also turn a golden colour slowly with exposure to sunlight.

The inner filling of buckwheat husks is removable via the ties on either end of the pillow. Buckwheat husks are a traditional Japanese pillow filling and while many modern pillows make use of plastic beads, the feel of real buckwheat is hard to capture.
