Hidasuki Banko-yaki Teapot - 210ml
Yamamoto TaisenThis elegant Banko-yaki kyusu (teapot) is made from a light-coloured, iron-rich, red Banko clay that contrasts with the vibrant, scarlet red hidasuki stripes. Banko-yaki (萬古焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Yokkaichi in Mie Prefecture, Japan. Its characteristic purple hue comes from the mixture of red oxidised iron and blue high temperature-baked iron in the clay.
Hidasuki (緋襷) is a traditional decoration created when the potter wraps rice straw around a piece before placing it into the kiln, where the alkalines in the straw react with iron in the clay body to produce striking scarlet burn marks in the shape of the straw wrapping. When fired in reduction, the reduction, these marks tend to be grey or blue.
