This Agano-yaki chatsubo (tea jar 茶壺) features a turqoise enamel over beige. A larger type of tea caddy traditionally used to store tencha before milling, it is suitable for all loose leaf teas. Because most chatsubo are not airtight, they are not suitable for long term storage and are only intended for presentation and heightening the tea making experience.
Agano-yaki (上野焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Fukuchi in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Praised for its elegance and light weight, Agano ware began being produced in the 17th century.
Agano ware is famous for its use of enamels over the glaze. The most well-known of these enamels produces a vibrant blue-green/turquoise dripping effect caused by copper oxide in the enamel.
