This bamboo futaoki (lid rest) is shaped for Ro use, and is made entirely from Japanese susudake bamboo. Bamboo futaoki for the ro (炉) season tend to be wider than those for furo and have the node closer to the middle of the piece. Susudake bamboo that was previously used in a traditional Japanese house's hearth, where it was exposed to smoke and soot, staining it a beautiful deep brown over the course of decades and sometimes centuries. As such, each piece of susudake is unique, and with traditional Japanese houses on the decline, susudake is becoming increasingly rare.
A futaoki (蓋置 - lid rest) is a small stand used to hold the lid of the kama or for resting the hishaku on. They are typically made of bamboo, ceramic, or metal, and come in a vast array of shapes and styles. While metal and ceramic futaoki can be quite ornate and are considered more formal, the common and basic bamboo types are largely undecorated and are the least formal style.
