This Asahi-yaki (朝日焼) houhin (handle-less teapot) is decorated with a crazed grey glaze, accented with a white hakeme brush stroke. Like all Asahi-yaki pieces, it is made with exceeding attention to detail. For example, the lip (the ledge on which the lid rests) features a '3-day moon'-crescent shaped extension above the filter which prevents leaks when pouring, and a setback on the rear side which aids in removing the used tea leaves.
Made by the world-renowned pottery workshop in Uji (near Kyoto) that dates back 16 generations and was founded over 400 years ago. While today they make a variety of high-quality ceramics, they were founded solely to perfect teaware for use in Japanese tea ceremonies. Today, the kiln is run by 15th generation potter Housai Matsubayashi and his son Yuusuke.
