This masterfully crafted Tokoname-yaki kyusu (teapot) is made from a deep brown Tokoname clay, with a unique, hand-textured surface, which gives off a rustic air.
This kyusu is decorated with a simple scene of white sakura (cherry blossoms) brushed in enamel against a matte green leafy background.
Its built-in ceramic debeso filter is perfect for naturally straining tea, with a wide shape for faster pouring and less clogging.
Made by master craftsman Kameoka Katsushi (亀岡克史) (b. 1950 - d. 2019) of the Motozo Workshop (素三). Known for his warm, organic, and unusual shapes Kameoka viewed himself as a craftsman rather than an artist. His work displays both his high level of technical skill and his boundless creativity and imagination.
Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, pottery has been made in Tokoname since the 12th century.
Today, Tokoname ware is known for its iconic brick-red clay called shudei. Famously used in teaware and bonsai pots, this clay’s vibrant colour comes from its rich iron content. Tea steeped in unglazed Tokoname teapots is said to have a mellower taste.
