This small nodate-sized hantsutsu-gata Shibukusa-yaki chawan (matcha bowl) features green and red geometric patterns decorated with flowers and a temple scene. Its smaller size makes it perfect to take with you when traveling or for use in an outdoor nodate (野点) tea gathering.
Made by Ryuzou Shibukusa (渋草柳三), this bowl comes in its original tomobako (wooden paulownia box).
One of Japan's younger pottery traditions, Shibukusa-yaki (渋草焼) began in 1841 when the 21st Gundai of Takayama in Hida invited potters from the nearby Seto and Kutani regions to produce pottery for his new klin. The influence of Kutani-yaki can be seen in the vibrant red paintings of bold landscapes and geometric patterns that are often found on Shibukusa wares.
