This hira chawan (matcha bowl) has a low, wide, irregular shape with a flaring lip and gentle rokurome (ろくろ目 - potters' wheel marks) which shows the flow of the potter's fingers as he shaped the piece on the wheel. A simple ash glaze shows off the clay's natural beauty.
Made by Akio Sainen (西念秋夫) of Todoroki Kiln (轟窯). Born in 1948 in Osaka, Sainen-san specialises in Sue ware and tea utensils.
This chawan comes in its original kiribako (桐箱 - wooden paulownia box)
