This Kiyomizu-yaki chawan (matcha bowl) is made in the classic hantsutsu-gata shape and is decorated in the classic sogimon (そぎ紋) style. Sogi, also called sogime or sogimon is a traditional ceramic decoration style of vertical fluting. On this chawan, the fluting design is widely spaced, giving a faceted impression. Atop a base glaze of textured matte black, this bowl sports patches of vibrant purple.

Please note: this bowl has a very rough finish which can be abrasive to chasen and chakin.

This chawan was made by Igura Toshiya (井栗敏也) of Toshiya Kiln (敏也窯). Born in 1962, Igura-san opened his own kiln in 1984 and has since been known for his unique spins on classic styles.

Kiyomizu-yaki (清水焼) (also called Shimizu-yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Gojōzaka district near Kiyomizu Temple, in Kyoto, Japan. A subset of Kyo-yaki which refers to all pottery made in the Kyoto area, Kiyomizu ware has been produced since the 16th century
