Faceted Purple Kiyomizu-yaki Chawan
Igura ToshiyaThis Kiyomizu-yaki chawan (matcha bowl) is made in the classic hantsutsu-gata shape and is decorated in the classic sogimon (そぎ紋) style. Sogi, also called sogime or sogimon is a traditional ceramic decoration style of vertical fluting. On this chawan, the fluting design is widely spaced, giving a faceted impression. Atop a base glaze of textured matte black, this bowl sports patches of vibrant purple.
This chawan was made by Igura Toshiya (井栗敏也) of Toshiya Kiln (敏也窯). Born in 1962, Igura-san opened his own kiln in 1984 and has since been known for his unique spins on classic styles.
