This porcelain Mino-yaki yunomi (tea cup) has a classic shape and is decorated with blue circular crests (丸紋 - marumon) bearing traditional Japanese patterns and designs. The pure white of porcelain lets you see the true colour of the tea. This classic combination of white porcelain and blue painted designs is called sometsuke (染付) in Japan, and was famously popularised in Ming dynasty Chinese wares.
Cups of this size and shape are also called senchawan (煎茶碗 - sencha cups) as they are ideal for drinking sencha.
Mino-yaki (美濃焼,) is a type of Japanese pottery produced in Mino Province in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Since the introduction of mass production in the Meiji period (1868–1912), Mino ware accounts for around 50% of Japanese pottery produced today.
