This sleek Tokoname yunomi (teacup) is made from a black clay and has a classic tulip shape with a subtly everted lip. The surface of the clay is left unpolished, giving it a matte finish and slightly textured feel. The cup is decorated with a thin white line of glaze that spirals around the cup and stops at the foot.

This cup is a perfect middle size for sencha or other teas. Cups of these size and shape are also called kumidashi (汲出) or senchawan (煎茶碗).

This teacup was made by Sawada Tomohiro (澤田朋大).

Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, pottery has been made in Tokoname since the 12th century.

Today, Tokoname ware is known for its iconic brick-red clay called shudei. Famously used in teaware and bonsai pots, this clay’s vibrant colour comes from its rich iron content. Tea steeped in unglazed Tokoname teapots is said to have a mellower taste.
