This striking pouring chawan (matcha bowl) features a deep shape for easy whisking and an elegantly crafted spout for serving usucha to multiple guests, or for making lattes. The red clay of the bowl is entirely glazed in an iron-rich glaze, producing a matte black, almost metallic finish. The foot is carved in the classic bamboo-node style (竹の節高台 - takenofushi koudai) and the lip features a subtle flare, reminiscent of tenmoku bowls.
Made by Kengo Sugawara (菅原顕悟) of Yōki Kiln (陽気窯). Sugawara-san is an independant potter who started a kiln at the foot of Mt. Katsuragi in Nara out of a desire to create goods with his hands. He specialises in kohiki (粉引) a Korean slip coating technique.
