This one-of-a-kind triangular rear-handled Tokoname-yaki kyusu (teapot) is made from Tokoname kokudei (黒泥) clay, which has the same properties as the iconic red shudei (朱泥) but is fired in reduction producing a dark brown or black. Of course, this teapot's main attraction is its unique and irregular trinagulare shape, which is hand-formed and crimped at the bottom edges to produce crisp lines and three small legs at each corner

On top of this triangular shape are ornate and baroque-style decorations, including a finely engraved textured background upon which vines and arabesques are intricately carved and painted with brown slip.

Unlike most Tokoname kyusu, this lid is made in the inset style, similar to the styles of Chinese Yixing teaware. In classic Shunen style, the spout has a slight downward bend designed to improve the pour.

The teapot's built-in sasame filter is perfect for naturally straining tea.

The kyusu comes in its original kiribako (桐箱 - paulownia wood box) signed and sealed by the artist.

This is a one-off piece, meaning that the item pictured is what you will receive.

Made by Mano Shunen (間野舜園). Born in 1950, Shunen-san is the second generation to use the Shunen name and has become famous for his incredibly intricate, multi-layered carved kyusu, which take the traditional art of carved teapots to the next level. Unlike the traditional method, in which the potter and the engraver/carver are two seperate artists, Shunen's unique vision and attention to detail means he crafts the entire piece himself, from making the clay, to throwing the pot, assembling the pieces, and carving the designs. Another unique aspect of his kyusu are the downturned spouts which Shunen designed to improve the pouring experience.

Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, pottery has been made in Tokoname since the 12th century.

Today, Tokoname ware is known for its iconic brick-red clay called shudei. Famously used in teaware and bonsai pots, this clay’s vibrant colour comes from its rich iron content. Tea steeped in unglazed Tokoname teapots is said to have a mellower taste.
