This elegant chawan (matcha bowl) is decorated in the Mishima (三島) style of slip inlay, a Korean technique in which white slip is inlaid into stamped patterns. Here, the interior features stamped flowers (印花 - inka) and incised lines. The outside of the bowl is accented with brush strokes of white slip (刷毛目 - hakeme). These white slip decorations contrast with the dark iron-rich clay and the ashy glaze. The foot is left unglazed as is trimmed in the classic bamboo-node style (竹の節高台 - takenofushi koudai).

Made by Kengo Sugawara (菅原顕悟) of Yōki Kiln (陽気窯). Sugawara-san is an independent potter who started a kiln at the foot of Mt. Katsuragi in Nara out of a desire to create goods with his hands. He specialises in kohiki (粉引) a Korean slip coating technique.
