Japanese Kogo - Koma Urushi Lacquer Incense Container

This Japanese kogo (incense container) is made from red lacquered wood, decorated with the traditional 'Koma' pattern. This distinctive design is of Southeast Asian origin, and is named for its resemblance to a spinning top.

In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kogo are used to hold wood chip incense during the furo (brazier - summer/spring) season while ceramic kogo are used to hold neriko (kneaded incense) during the ro (hearth - autumn/winter) season.
