This handmade Tokoname-yaki kyusu (teapot) features a yōhen (窯変) patch and is decorated with gourds. Though made from the same red clay that Tokoname is famous for, this kyusu has been fired in low oxygen conditions, turning the clay a darker colour.

Yōhen (窯変), which means ""changed by the fire"", refers to the attractive patches and gradients of red and brown across the pot caused by these firing conditions. This teapot has a ceramic 'sasame' filter which means that the tea does not come into contact with metal while it steeps. Wider than the more traditional debeso (half-spherical) filters, the sasame-style allows for faster pouring and less clogging.

Made by Gyokko (玉光) in Tokoname, the high level of craftsmanship can be seen the perfect fit of the lid which reduces the chance of leakage.

Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The site of one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, pottery has been made in Tokoname since the 12th century. Today, Tokoname ware is known for its iconic brick-red clay called shudei. Famously used in teaware and bonsai pots, this clay’s vibrant colour comes from its rich iron content. Tea steeped in unglazed Tokoname teapots is said to have a mellower taste.
