Japanese Matcha Bowl - Kawai Masaki 川合正樹 - Celadon Glazed Tenmoku-gata Chawan

This stunning celadon chawan (matcha bowl) is thrown in the classical tenmoku shape, with a small foot, conical body, and cinched lip. This traditional shape is covered in a pale blue ice-crack celadon glaze (hyōretsukannyū seiji- 氷裂貫入青磁) with a green and gold rim.

This chawan was made in 1988 by Kawai Masaki (川合正樹) of Tatsuki Kiln (樹窯) to the Imperial Poetic Theme (御題・勅題 - gyodai/chokudai) of the year: 緑 (midori - green)

Born in 1949, Kawai Masaki is well-known for his celadon tenmoku bowls. Even by the high standards set by his standard bowls, this particular chawan's glaze exceptional.

The chawan comes in its original kiribako (桐箱 - wooden paulownia box) simply marked with the kanji: 御題 綠 (Theme: Green).
