This stunning Tanba-yaki Chaire (茶入 - tea container) is made in the classic daikai (内梅 - 'inland sea) shape, with a wide, flat body and rounded shoulders. It has a classic and subtle yellow-green ash glaze.

The chaire was made by Ichino Shinsui (市野信水) of Shinsui Kiln (信水窯) and comes paired with an orange and gold shifiku (仕覆 - silk brocade pouch. The chaire ships in its original kiribako (桐箱 - wooden paulownia box)

Born in 1957, Shinsui-san is a 2nd generation potter who specialises in tea ceremony utensils fired in his traditional anagama and noborigama (climbing-style) kilns.

Tanba-yaki (丹波焼) from Hyogo Prefecture is one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan, dating back to the Heian era. Classical Tanba style is characterised by splashes of natural green ash glazes over a warm red-orange clay. Compared to the similar styles of Bizen and Shigaraki, Tanba-yaki is generally perceived as softer and gentler.
