This Japanese kogo (incense container) is made entirely from wood and undecorated.
In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kogo are used to hold wood chip incense during the furo (brazier - summer/spring) season while ceramic kogo are used to hold neriko (kneaded incense) during the ro (hearth - autumn/winter) season.
